Client: Monmouthshire County Council

Strategy to create a sustainable future for Monmouthshire’s museums and cultural attractions.

Like many local authorities, Monmouthshire County Council has had to review its services in light of changes to public sector funding. AMION’s Visitor & Leisure team was appointed to review a portfolio of three museums and three cultural attractions which includes a castle and country park, an old station and the old Shire Hall. The purpose of the study was to make recommendations about creating a viable future for the service.

The review was wide ranging and included a review of building and assets as well as governance and service delivery. Core to the work was the need to protect the collections and continue to make them accessible to residents and visitors in the future. Recommendations looked at ways in which the service could increase income from a range of sources as well as making better use of the expertise of the professional teams running the venues. The work also needed to take account of plans for changes to the governance of other areas under the Council’s management and to consider how the museums and cultural attractions would fit within this. It also looked at a funding and investment plan for the future.
